Maternity Photography - 5 Best Tips to Prepare for your Maternity Session

Congratulations! Being pregnant is one of the most precious moments in your life - it’s a new beginning!

Your pregnancy will go by so quickly and before you know it, you will be saying hello to your bundle of joy.

A maternity photoshoot is a wonderful way of ensuring your pregnant moments live with you forever. You can also incorporate some of your favourite images in with your newborn album. You can include a few maternity images in the album that you create to celebrate your newborn baby - from pregnancy to birth! Those few maternity images within the album will allow you to remember how it all began.

There are many tips about how to get the most out of your maternity session. Here are my 5 best tips for ensuring you get the best out of your photoshoot:

Book your Session in Advance

Make sure you schedule your session in advance so that you can secure the date you really like. This way you can plan your session in detail and as the date gets nearer, you can become excited about the upcoming session.

The best time for your maternity photo shoot is when you are nearer the beginning of your third trimester - around 30-35 weeks. This is the time when your belly is the most rounded and you will be able to see your beautiful belly in your images.

Bring your Family

Solo pregnancy shots are very memorable because you are capturing you and your belly - where your little one is growing. You should have a few images of just you and your baby that’s growing inside you.

You should also consider having your partner in some of your images. Your partner being photographed beside you is also very special. Being able to capture those close precious couple moments are so beautiful. Let your photographer capture those emotional images of you and your partner.

If this is not your first pregnancy then having your child/children beside you celebrating the new addition to your family is truly amazing. Making your child part of the photoshoot experience means that they will also treasure this moment, and the maternity session becomes a family experience.

Pamper Yourself

Make your photoshoot a special time for you by pampering yourself. This is a great opportunity to book a hair and make-up appointment which will make you feel confident, relaxed and feel beautiful at your photoshoot session.

Your hair and make-up is all done for you so after your maternity session, why not go on a date night. You’re already ready looking radiant. Enjoy a night out before the baby comes!

Plan your Maternity Poses

You know you want a maternity shoot but what poses excites you the most? This is a great time to look through your photographer’s social media sites and also the internet to find those maternity poses that you love.

Pinterest is also a great resource and you can create and inspiration board that will help you plan your photo session. But don’t forget to check Google images as there are so many images for you to scan through, too. Chat with your chosen photographer about the poses that you love and discuss how they can be incorporated into your photoshoot.

Avoid Pregnancy Fatigue

Maternity photo sessions are a very exciting time, but it can be tiring too. Before you get to the studio, make sure you have eaten something.

On the day, remember to stay well hydrated and bring some healthy snacks to your photoshoot. This will help you to keep your energy levels high.

Maternity sessions can be anything from an hour to two hours long and include standing and lying down poses with a change of outfits. All this movement can become tiring so remember to listen to your body and take things easy if need be.

At NP Photography we always make sure that your maternity photo session is customised to your needs. At your pre-consultation, we would chat about styles, poses, gowns and what your aspirations are.
