What to Wear for your Family and Newborn Photo Shoot?

It’s so exciting when you book your portrait session, but then comes the stress of what should we wear for our family and newborn photo shoot?

One of the questions we, at NP Photography, are always asked when photographing clients in Toronto and around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is what should I wear?

Colors

Colors are very personal – some like the cooler tones and some opt for the warmer tones. When it comes to photography you need to ensure each family member’s clothing are complementing each other.  Also, keep to solid colors as patterns can be distracting and take the attention off you.

Cooler and warmer tones

Choose either cool tones or warm tones and work within these range. Cool tones are colors that conjure up the image of grass and water (blues, greens and purples) whilst warm tones bring about the feeling of the sun and heat (reds, orange and yellows). However, if you love bright colors then there is no need to avoid them – parents can dress in neutral colors and have your children dress up in more popping colors.

Limit choice of colors – don’t wear the same colors

For your photo shoot, limit your color choices to around one to three. Remember, if everyone is wearing the same color this can make the photo look very monotonous – if you err more towards the darker shades then everyone should wear darker shades such as navy, dark green, and burgundy. If you opt for more lighter shades then look at hues of yellow, orange and red.

Jewelry

Keep jewelry to a minimum. You don’t want anything large and shiny to distract the viewers eyes from you. You are the center piece of the photo and you should shine out!

Shoes and socks

You need to think about what shoes and socks you are wearing, especially if you are going to have a full portrait. For beach shots you can go bare foot but for other shoots your shoes and socks need to compliment your outfit.

Family Connections

My last piece of advice is that your family photo session is all about your family and the intimate loving bonds that exists between yourselves, so relax and enjoy your portrait session. Let the joy and loving connections shine through!

To book your newborn or family photography session with NP Photography, please email me at info@npphotography.ca or alternatively call me on 416 962 8002. For newborns, book your session early whilst you are pregnant to avoid disappointments - newborns are best photographed under 15 days old as that is when they are at their sleepiest and are most flexible which allows us to capture those gorgeous poses!
